In 1621, the Plymouth Colony celebrated the first American Thanksgiving to commemorate the harvest after a disastrous winter. In 1789, George Washington was the first president to declare the holiday. In 1863 during the civil war, Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day. Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted to lengthen Christmas shopping season and proclaimed thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. However, in 1941 congress decreed that Thanksgiving Day should fall on the fourth Thursday of November. As we celebrate thanksgiving November 25, 2010, let us also thank our veterans and most importantly the fighting men and women defending our freedom on the front-line far from home. Wherever you are, have a gluttonous Thanksgiving Day… Citizens, residents and visitors, let us celebrate two hundred thirty four years of America’s independence. Though the country is young when compared to European dynasties, the founders of the new republic recognized the evidence that their creator created all men equal. Also, remember our fighting men and women on Independence Day. Many come home from wars mutilated and some in body bags. Their lives changed immeasurably, others gone forever. They sacrificed everything for our freedom. Join friends and family Independence Day 4th of July for a joyful time at parades, picnics, fireworks or the beach to relax.
